For everyone to do their bit to fight climate change, volunteers are being called upon to grab a spade and sign-up for the biggest tree planting campaign in the UK’s history.

The Big Climate Fightback Tree Planting Campaign

Plots all around the country are being prepared in suitable locations for the 30th of November. The Big Climate Fightback Campaign kicks off seeking pledges from 1 million people. They encourage local groups to run tree-planting events. Councils are being asked for their permission to plant trees on council properties, outside schools and other publicly owned areas. They urge businesses to plant trees in and around their premises where there is available space.

They encourage people who do not have their own space for planting trees to identify potential spots and get permission from the owners to plant trees there.

They hope to plant a tree for every person in the country by 2025. The charity will provide the local broad-leaf variety of trees, such as Oak, Birch, and Hawthorn.

Writer and Broadcaster Sandi Toksvig pledged to plant a tree and call on others to follow in her footsteps. “Climate change is a real threat and it affects us all. But there is the simplest of all solutions. It’s green and lovely – the humble tree” she said. “I urged people to get off their sofas and plant a tree. It’s so simple and by taking part you could be one in a million!”

Zero Carbon Target

According to the Climate Change Committee, the government statutory advisers on the climate crisis, the UK should have 1.5 billion trees by 2050 to meet the zero-carbon target. This target is in line with international scientific warnings on climate crises. The government set aside 5,000 hectares a year for England alone. Unfortunately, planting rates have fallen short of that target; last year only 1,420 hectares of new woodland got planted.

Tender Love and Care

Trees also need care and attention after we plant them to ensure their survival. Therefore, groups are encouraged to take part beyond the planting stage. The Woodland Trust also warned that tree planting on its own is not enough. “As individuals, we all need to do much more to reduce our impact on the planet by cutting emissions and reducing pressure on resources,” said Darren Moorcroft, the charity’s chief executive.

A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said in an article:

Working with the Woodland Trust and other organisations, we also want to encourage everyone to play a part and help us plant more trees. We’ve already kicked off the creation of a Northern Forest, which will see 50m trees planted from Liverpool to Hull, and we have set up two funds worth £60m to drive up planting rates, including in our towns and cities. Later this year, we will consult on a new English Tree Strategy, focusing on how to speed up woodland creation across the country.
